New Yorkers have a long standing appreciation for culture and the arts. Nowhere is this commitment more evident than on the stretch of Fifth Avenue, along the Upper East Side, known as "Museum Mile."  The Mile is home to many treasures including the world-renown Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met), the controversial Frank Lloyd Wright designed Solomon R. Guggenheim and many others.

Museum Mile should be viewed as a reoccurring destination; the Met alone could take a week to ten days to enjoy in its entirety.  Your best bet is to use the resources available on the web to lay out a general plan of attack while allowing some time to view special exhibitions that may pop up along the way.

If you have never been to New York City we recommend starting with one of the big three.  The Met, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), or the Guggenheim. Of course if you find yourself interested in a specific area of art many of the smaller museums boast reputable collections and offer a less crowded environment for appreciation of the exhibits.

If you feel like taking a break from the same old European masters we suggest the Museum of African Art, El Museo del Barrio, or the Jewish Museum.  These art museums offer a refreshing exposure that allows one to broaden their concepts and appreciation, and ultimately assists in resolving the question of what one considers art.  The exceptionally daring art aficionado may choose to make a trip to SoHo and visit the New Museum of Contemporary Art. This museum is always on the cutting edge and often finds itself in the headlines due to its controversial exhibitions.

Below is a list of recommended museums with information on each and links to their web sites. The list is by no means exhaustive and we encourage you to investigate your personal interests not reflected below.
